Would You Ever Move to a Tropical Island?

February 16, 2013 | By Rich | |

Move to a Tropical IslandHave you ever thought of selling it all and making the move to a tropical island?  It’s been on my mind recently, from totally out of the blue.

I was chatting with an acquaintance a couple of days ago, who said he was heading to the Caribbean next week for vacation.  I asked him where he was headed and he said “Nevis Island.”

I told him I had never heard of Nevis before, and he replied, “That’s exactly why we go there.”

I think maybe I should be offended by that comment. What do you think?

Anyway…

I looked it up online and discovered that Nevis is one of the least commercialized islands in the Caribbean.  The 36-square-mile island is located 200 miles southeast of Puerto Rico, just west of Antigua.

According to NevisIsland.com…

Green and serene, Nevis is truly one of the remaining unspoilt places and proudly carries the name, “Queen of the Caribees.” From the top of the 3,232-foot Nevis Peak to the depths of the clear waters offshore, there is a world of flora and fauna to be explored. In the hills, the comical green vervet monkeys chatter and scamper; in the sea, the whales cruise by. Stroll around and see the architecture of eras gone by: churches, windmills, and refurbished Great Houses.

Sounds dreamy! I’d love to take my wife there someday.

As I read more about Nevis Island, I ran across an article about a woman from the U.S. who moved there 14 years ago with only $1,000 in her pocket, and has carved out a nice living ever since.

Then I found a site which listed Nevis as one of the top 5 islands for easy transitions. And it said that the Philippines is a top island destination because you can live well on $800 per month.

$800 a month?

So this got me thinking…

“I wonder if we would ever sell it all and move to a tropical island and start over?”

Of course, we’d have to find a way to support ourselves, because we’re not financially independent yet.

But the idea of selling it all and moving overseas to a tropical island has a certain appeal to me.

It would be a big adventure, moving to a place where we don’t know anyone. Totally starting over from scratch.

I’m not saying I’d sit on the beach all day. I’d still be involved in kingdom enterprises of one sort or another.

Someday. Somehow. I think I want to do this. And I’m pretty sure my wife would be up for it too.

What about you?  Would you ever sell it all and move to a tropical island, or some other exotic locale?

I’ve never heard of Nevis before it sounds right up my alley! I would love simple living, grow/harvest your own food. Contribute to the community, it would be awesome. I may look into this, the only problem I foresee if the coming and going.

Money Wisdom from the Bible

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." - 1 Timothy 6:17-18 (NIV) Click for more of the Bible and Money...
